Retire In Lufkin

Where Your Story Becomes

What happens when a geophysicist and his globetrotting wife call it a day and decide to retire? They put down roots where they can continue to grow! That’s Dale and Vickie Boren’s story. They met in South Louisiana, dated, got engaged and off they went. Their first assignment with Mobil was in Paris, France. They’ve been traveling, learning and loving life ever since.

The Borens had their pick of places to retire, but deliberately chose Lufkin. In Dale’s words, “We have access to the college, enjoy the beautiful piney woods and the clean air, and we can get to Houston and back in a day. There’s no better spot to live!” Vickie adds her own ‘list of likes’, “Life is a breeze here. You can get your license renewed, pay your taxes, go to the grocery store, or visit a doctor without ever having to wait in a line or a reception room. That gives us more time to enjoy our lives.” Both Dale and Vickie have pursued new passions in Lufkin. Dale has sharpened his skills by taking digital electronics classes at Angelina College. Vicki earned her Master Gardener status through the Texas Agriculture Extension Service.

If you have a yearning for lifelong learning, Lufkin fits the bill. Just ask the Borens - if you can catch them at home!

Dennis Rankin never pictured himself a photographer, but the retired paper company executive is conquering apertures and f stops! Rankin joined the Angelina Photographic Association, and it’s been a hobby that’s opened up his already big world.

“We usually choose a subject and shoot like crazy then share the best of our efforts at club meetings. The exchange of ideas has really helped me improve my photography.”

Teachable Spirits

Church is a natural place for many retirees to connect with people in a community. That’s exactly how Kenneth and Virginia King made themselves at home. The Kings retired from a pastorate in Virginia in the late 1980s. For the first time in their married lives they had a ‘say so’ about where they could live and they said Lufkin! Why Lufkin? Kenneth laughs, “It’s Texas with trees!” With a daughter in the Metroplex and family in Missouri and Oklahoma, it was near everyone. Kenneth has served as a supply preacher, an interim pastor and provided pastoral support for hospice. Virginia is right beside him teaching and ministering to others. Their ministry, in retirement, is in full bloom and the community as a whole is blessed by it.
